on morning of 19 january 1942 ship sailing unescorted 150 nautical miles (280 km) off cape hatteras, taking zigzag course make more difficult hit, when @ 0743 hrs u-66 commanded korvettenkapitän robert-richard zapp hit 2 stern-launched torpedoes. liner sank in 30 minutes.


three of 6 lifeboats damaged, other 3 launched. 1 commanded chief officer. had capacity 63 people managed embark 76 survivors. occupants hear more people in water, neither see them in dark nor take them aboard overcrowded boat if had found them.


the boat had no radio transmitter , limited rations of drinking water, ship s biscuit , condensed milk. shipped water , needed constant baling, had mast, sail , oars , chief officer percy kelly set course west toward usa s atlantic coast sea lanes , land. boat @ sea 5 days, in time 5 of occupants died. survivors sighted army troopship usat coamo , signalled flashlight. coamo s master misread flashes enemy submarine preparing attack, , going continue without stopping. when survivors shone light on boat s sail correctly understood signal. coamo rescued boat s 71 surviving occupants, landing them @ san juan, puerto rico on 28 january.


of 3 lifeboats launched, chief officer kelly s found. including 5 died in boat, total of 251 people lady hawkins lost. master huntly giffen, 85 of crew, 1 dems gunner , 164 of passengers, 2 of whom distressed british seamen (i.e. survivors previous sinkings). 71 survivors whom coamo rescued percy kelly, 21 crew , 49 passengers.
