1920 – margie song composed con conrad , j. russel robinson lyrics benny davis. introduced original dixieland jazz band , popularized eddie cantor s 1921 recording. song 1 of first hits both conrad , davis, , later used in films margie (1946) , eddie cantor story (1954). name inspired cantor s five-year-old daughter. song known little margie .
1921 – sheik of araby song composed ted snyder lyrics harry b. smith , francis wheeler. written in response popularity of rudolph valentino film sheik. club royal orchestra introduced song on first recording in 1921. 2 recordings of trombonist jack teagarden have been cited big influence song s standard status.
1922 – bugle call rag ragtime song billy meyers, jack pettis , elmer schoebel. first recorded friar s society orchestra (later new orleans rhythm kings) , popularized benny goodman , glenn miller in 1930s. duke ellington based 1939 composition sergeant shy on song. original recording of song titled bugle call blues .
1922 – china boy song phil boutelje , dick winfree. popularized paul whiteman s 1929 recording featuring solo bix beiderbecke. 1927 recording mckenzie , condon s chicagoans defined sound of chicago style jazz. benny goodman s 1935 recording revived interest in song, , performed in goodman s carnegie hall concert in 1938.

1923 – charleston jazz orchestration charleston dance, composed james p. johnson lyrics cecil mack. introduced elisabeth welch in 1923 broadway musical runnin wild, success brought charleston dance international popularity. johnson s original rhythmic accompaniment inspired several later songs, many of used word charleston in title. song played in 1946 film s wonderful life, james stewart , donna reed, @ dance scene. featured production number in 1950 film tea two. featured on episode of 1970s sitcom brady bunch.
1923 – tin roof blues jazz composition george brunies, paul mares, ben pollack, leon roppolo , mel stitzel of new orleans rhythm kings. band first recorded tune in 1923, , became major influence later jazz groups. 1 of new orleans jazz pieces played. jo stafford s 1953 hit make love me used tune s music added lyrics.
