in 1940, pontiac introduced torpedo on general motors c-body. along oldsmobile, pontiac had distinction of having 3 of gm s mainstream platforms year, last 1 more year. new c-body 1940 pontiac torpedo shared cadillac series 62, buick roadmaster , super, , oldsmobile series 90 featured cutting-edge torpedo styling. shoulder , hip room on 5 in (127 mm) wider, running boards eliminated , exterior streamlined , 2–3 in (51–76 mm) lower. when combined column-mounted shift lever cars offered true 6 passenger comfort. these changes had been influenced cadillac sixty special.


the 1940 torpedo had larger windows , wider seats other pontiacs, front , rear ventiplanes on 4-door sedans , long gracefully streamlined rear decks. concealed hinges used on doors. doors wide. hood ornament had plastic indian head mounted in metal base. front end sheet metal looked on other pontiacs. eight-cylinder badges used front , rear. door locks had weather sealed keyholes. gas filler tubes enclosed under flip-up lids on left rear fenders. window openings trimmed bright metal moldings. available inline 8-cylinder engine , either 4-passenger 2-door sedan or 5-passenger 4-door sedan. heater, cigarette lighter, six-tube radios, electric clock, , trunk light optional.


in 1941 a-body , b-body redesigned lower, wider runningboard-less bodies (though running boards offered extra-cost option) consequently, pontiac renamed entire line-up torpedo , models ranging low-end a-bodied deluxe torpedo (with 119-inch wheelbase), mid-level b-bodied streamliner torpedo (with 122-inch wheelbase), , high-end c-bodied custom torpedo (with same 122-inch wheelbase previous year). models came either six- or eight-cylinder engines.


a wide grille horizontal bars used on a-bodied deluxe torpedo. parking lights built grille. headlights recessed new, wider fenders. speed-line ribbing molded sides of both front , rear fenders. deluxe sixes in series 25. deluxe eights in series 27. sixes had shorter hood ornaments, 6 badge on hood , pontiac lettering on side. eights had larger hood ornaments, 8 badge on hood , pontiac deluxe lettering on side. deluxe torpedoes had notchback styling. 5 body styles available: 3-passenger 2-door business coupe, 5-passenger 2-door sedan coupe, 5-passenger 2-door sedan, 5-passenger 2-door convertible , 5-passenger 4-door sedan. 5-passenger 4-door metropolitan sedan added in middle of model year. had 4-window styling rear ventiplanes similar 4-door custom torpedo sedan instead of 6-window styling found on regular 4-door deluxe torpedo sedan. convertible had power top.


sleek fastback styling characterized b-bodied streamliner torpedo. roofline swept windshield rear bumper in 1 smooth curve. front end sheet metal same on deluxe torpedo , trim difference between sixes , eights same. streamliner sixes in series 26. streamliner eights in series 28. beige corded wool cloth upholstery. there super streamliner torpedo subseries. supers had same body styling , trim featured two-tone worsted wool cloth upholstery pin stripes. added sponge rubber seat cushions, electric clocks, deluxe flexible steering wheels , divan type seats folding center armrests. 2 bodystyles available: 5-passenger 2-door sedan coupe , 5-passenger 4-door sedan.


the c-bodied custom torpedo had notchback sedan , coupe previous year new 4-door 8-passenger wood bodied station wagon in standard or deluxe trim. styling similar deluxe , streamliner torpedoes variations between sixes , eights. custom sixes in series 24. custom eights in series 29. station wagon bodies built hercules , ionia. ionia bodies had more rounded rear end treatment. standard station wagons had imitation leather upholstery while deluxe types had genuine leather cushions.


1941 last year pontiac offered model gm c-body until big clamshell tailgate pontiac safari , grand safari station wagons of 1971-76.


the way 8-cylinder engine on gm body 1941 1948 buy oldsmobile special 68 or pontiac deluxe torpedo eight. in sense these perhaps first muscle cars.
