on april 20, 2010, deepwater horizon, oil rig located in gulf of mexico owned transocean , drilling british petroleum (bp) exploded, killing 11 workers , injuring 16. rig burned on day before sunk gulf on april 22, 2010. following explosion, seafloor oil gusher flowed 87 days, spilling estimated 4.9 million barrels of oil gulf.


the spill resulted in widespread damage environment , ecology of gulf coast states, subsequent economic damage tourism , fishing industries. bp settled department of justice record-high $4.525 billion in fines, further legal proceedings ongoing. in september 2014, u.s. district judge issued ruling bp responsible spill, result in as $18 billion in additional penalties under clean water act.
