in august 1662 deane met samuel pepys, clerk of acts , member of navy board. pepys impressed deane s ability , saw in him potential rival christopher pett, against whom pepys held political grudge. on pepys recommendation navy board reopened derelict harwich dockyard in october 1664 , appointed deane master shipwright, elevating him being pett s assistant nominal equal. deane, promotion meant have free hand in designing , constructing naval vessels, albeit @ smaller dockyard great navy establishments of portsmouth, plymouth or deptford.


deane 1 of earliest apply scientific principles building of naval vessels, , between 1666 , 1675 designed , built 25 vessels royal navy, including rupert, francis, roebuck, resolution, swiftsure, , harwich.


harwich dockyard closed in 1668, following end of second anglo-dutch war, , deane appointed master shipwright @ portsmouth dockyard. in 1670 became first english shipwright use iron substantial construction component in royal navy vessel, u-shaped iron bars secure planking of hms royal james relative internal beams within hull. patron pepys disapproved of innovation , matter referred king, charles ii, endorsed deane s actions. however, innovation not repeated in other royal navy vessels until adoption of 1719 establishment fifty years later.


in 1672 deane promoted become commissioner @ portsmouth, becoming member of navy board. no longer responsible shipbuilding @ portsmouth, still able build several ships private contractor, @ harwich @ rotherhithe.
