pre-historic

neolithic history represented in region mourya mane, several-thousand-year-old stone age colony. several neolithic dwellings still bear paintings clear , intact day @ onke kindi . rare human settlement find traces of microlithic, megalithic , neolithic age of human life @ 1 same spot. anegundi area older vijayanagar empire, , old planet. per geologists anegundi area 4 billion years old. till date, village living heritage site in true sense. nearest pre-historic sites hirebenekal, chikkarampur, mallapur, venkatapur , anjanahalli. pre-historic rock shelters , paintings found in tungabhadra river valley.


rock art

at anegundi there prehistoric settlement called onake kindi. boulders rock art, rock red , white markings had figures of human , bull. on boulder there circular diagram sun , moon , symbolism. rock painting belonged iron age, date 1500 bc , faded circular painting rare depiction of megalithic style of burial, includes human body in middle surrounded stone circle , burial goods. site of megalithic dolmens located in hills locals call mourya mane (morya means short in local language), 5 7 feet high sheet rocks forms 4 walls , rock sheet used roof (neolithic period), 10 km away anegundi, neolithic dwellings in elu gudda hill range, benegal indaragi gudda. 1.5 km anegundi, there rock shelters , paintings, paintings found in hill ranges called locally elu gudda salu.

ancient kingdom

anegundi ancient town mythical kishkindha of ramayana, lively settlement has mahals , monuments (gagan mahal), there forts , palaces, ruined temples, lush green padi fields.

pampa sarovar related shiva , parvati featured in ramayana, sabari devotee of rama met here, legends of ramayana including hanuman, sugriva pervading around anegundi. pilgrims consider pampa sarovara holy place.


pre vijayanagara period

aneguni in kannada means elephant gorge, older hampi, in fact mother kingdom (cradle city of vijayanagara). anegundi history dates 3rd bc century under ashoka empire. anegundi ruled various dynasties shatavahanas, kadambas, chalukyas, rashtrakutas, delhi sultanate, vijayanagara empire , bahamanis.


vijayanagara period

early 14th century, elephant enclosure in kannada known anegundi, named because of elephant contingent of vijayanagar army. first capital of vijayanagar empire , capital of several other dynasties. in 1334, deva raya chief minister of anegundi became ruler of anegundi. when delhi sultans invaded warangal, harihara , bukka escaped , came anegundi, later founded vijayanagar empire @ hampi. tallarighatta gate(talwar ghatta) (erstwhile toll gate) entrance anegundi hampi side, collapsed modern day bridge under construction between hampi , anegundi across tungabhadra river. crossing river in coracle (boat) circular basket shaped made of cane, bamboo , wrapped in plastic sheet. coracle used ferry people in vijayanagar time also, mentioned dominoes paes portuguese traveller in 16th century, there mention of carrying twenty persons , horses , oxen cross river.


during 16th, 17th , 18th centuries, anegundi ruled bijapur sultans, moghuls, marathas , tipu sultan. according 1824 treaty british , hyderabad nizam, king of vijayanagar ruled hampi lost kingdom, provided monthly pension of rs 300, forced leave hampi , make anegundi official residence, rani lalkumari bai last descendant received monthly pension.


anegundi fort

anegundi has fort many gates; there durga temple , fort entrance, there tombs laying scattered around. there ganesha cave temple. vijayanagar kings used pray before every battle @ durga temple, used visit pampa sarovar , shri lakshmi temple. royal descendants of vijayanagar empire still exist in anegundi.
