The Gate 7 Tragedy Olympiacos F.C.



the history of karaiskakis stadium , olympiacos marked worst tragedy ever hit greek sports, known karaiskakis stadium disaster. on 8 february 1981, olympiacos hosted aek athens league match, ended 6–0, in unprecedented triumph host team of piraeus. during last minutes of game, thousands of olympiacos fans @ gate 7 rushed exit, stadium s main entrance , celebrate players, doors closed , turnstiles still in place, making exit impossible. people continued come down stands, unable see happened, stairs of gate 7 became death trap; people crushed, tens of fans injured , twenty-one young people died, of them suffocation.


in memory of event, every year on 8 february, there memorial service @ stadium in honour of supporters died in incident. service attended thousands of fans every year, rhythmically shouting phrase, Αδέρφια, ζείτε, εσείς μας οδηγείτε. (adhélfia, zíte, esís mas odhiyíte, brothers, live, ones guide us. ). @ tribune part of stadium gate 7 now, seats colored black instead of red, shaping number 7 , whereas there monument on eastern side of stadium, bearing names of 21 supporters killed on day in stadium.


even though incident affected solely fanbase of olympiacos, other teams pay respects people killed well, consider incident tragedy not 1 team, whole country. in past, foreign teams, such liverpool , red star belgrade, have honoured incident s victims.
