History Volkstaat



historically, boers have exhibited drive independence resulted in establishment of different republics in modern republic of south africa. voortrekkers proclaimed separate independent republics, notably natalia republic, orange free state , south african republic (the transvaal). however, after second anglo-boer war (1899-1902), british rule led dissolution of last 2 remaining boer states (the orange free state , south african republic).


under apartheid, south african government promoted afrikaner culture, afrikaans , english official languages, , majority of politicians running country afrikaners. underlying principle of apartheid racial separatism, , means implemented, such homeland system of bantustans, extremely biased against non-european majority excluded them exercising rights in broader south africa. afrikaners held privileged position in south african society, alongside other europeans.


in 1980s, group of right-wing afrikaners, led hf verwoerd s son-in-law, formed group called oranjewerkers. planned community based on afrikaner self-determination , , attempted create neo- boerstaat (literally: farmer state, reference idiomatic term afrikaner-only state) in remote eastern transvaal (now mpumalanga) community of morgenzon.


in 1988 professor carel boshoff (1927-2011) founded afrikaner-vryheidstigting (afrikaner freedom foundation), or avstig. avstig proposed volkstaat in northern cape province, in largely rural , minimally developed region. avstig bought town of orania in 1991, , turned model volkstaat. boshoff continued representative of freedom front, political party advocating volkstaat concept.


orania lies @ far eastern apex of original volkstaat state, near boundaries of 3 provinces northern cape, eastern cape, , free state meet.
