island skunks exhibit similar diets of mainland skunks. carnivorous, , unlike mainland relatives consume insects, feed on island deer mice. analysis of skunks on santa cruz island showed consumption of insects , occasional lizards in addition deer mice. insects consisted of jerusalem crickets, along grasshoppers, crickets, beetles, caterpillars, ear wigs, , ants. seasonally available fruits , berries part of skunks diet, including grapes, summer holly, stems, , cactus fruits. channel island skunk 1 of 2 terrestrial carnivores living on island, other being island fox. 2 species in competition resources , island skunk’s diet became more omnivorous in 1990s due decrease in island fox populations. in recent years, skunks have been observed expanding carnivorous diets include seabirds. birds typically nest in sea caves , recent expansion has been attributed increase in population following decline of foxes.
