the safety matches work of 2 swedish chemists; jöns jacob berzelius, invented modern chemical notation, discovered dangerous white phosphorus in matches replaced more benign red phosphorus, not able produce match reliable enough everyday use. pasch, student of berzelius, managed construct match both replacing white phosphorus red, , moving phosphorus head of match specially prepared striking surface. pasch granted patent on safety match in 1844. manufacturing started @ j.s. bagge & co:s kemiska fabrik (j.s. bagge & company s chemical factory) in stockholm, ran difficulties due quality of striking surface. problem production of red phosphorus prohibitively expensive making final matches expensive.


because of this, pasch unable commercially exploit invention , production ceased. not until john edvard lundström , younger brother carl frans, took pasch design , improved on safety match became commercially successful decade later, around 1855-60. lundström s safety match got award @ “world exhibition” in paris 1855.
