the gospel of luke, @ luke 24:13-35, records jesus appeared 2 disciples walking jerusalem emmaus, described being 60 stadia (10.4 12 km depending on definition of stadion used) jerusalem, after resurrection. 1 of disciples named cleopas in verse 18, while companion remains unnamed.
cleopas disciple followed jesus , reminded jesus of of people believed in him , lord. gospel places story on evening of day of jesus resurrection. 2 disciples have heard tomb of jesus found empty earlier day. discussing events of past few days when stranger asks them discussing. eyes kept recognizing him. rebukes them unbelief , explains prophecies messiah them. on reaching emmaus, ask stranger join them evening meal. when breaks bread eyes opened , recognize him resurrected jesus. jesus vanishes. cleopas , friend hasten jerusalem carry news other disciples, , arrive in time proclaim eleven gathered others jesus alive. while describing events, jesus appeared again there, giving them commission evangelize. took them out far bethany , blessed them before ascending heaven.
a similar event mentioned in gospel of mark (mark 16:12–16:13) although disciples destination not stated. passage believed late addition derived gospel of luke. incident not mentioned in gospel of matthew or john, or in list of witnesses resurrection given in 1 corinthians 15.
