in diary on 17 march 1969, haldeman wrote:


historic day. k[issinger]’s “operation breakfast” came off @ 2:00 pm our time. k excited, p[resident].


and next day:


k’s “operation breakfast” great success. came beaming in report, productive. lot more secondaries had been expected. confirmed intelligence. no reaction few days, if ever.


the bombing began on night of 18 march raid 60 b-52 stratofortress bombers, based @ andersen air force base, guam. target base area 353, supposed location of cosvn in fishhook. although aircrews briefed mission take place in south vietnam, 48 of bombers diverted across cambodian border , dropped 2,400 tons of bombs. mission designated breakfast, after morning pentagon planning session @ devised.


breakfast successful (in u.s. terms) general abrams provided list of 15 more known base areas targeting. 5 remaining missions , targets were: lunch (base area 609), snack (base area 351), dinner (base area 352), supper (base area 740), , dessert (base area 350). sac flew 3,800 b-52 sorties against these targets, , dropped 108,823 tons of ordnance during missions. due continued reference meals in codenames, entire series of missions referred operation menu. studies , observations group forward air controllers of military assistance command, vietnam provided 70 percent of menu bomb damage intelligence


nixon , kissinger went great lengths keep missions secret. in order prevent criticism of bombing, elaborate dual reporting system of missions had been formulated during brussels meeting between nixon, haig, , colonel sitton.
