the white family involved in rock hill beginning, before incorporated town.


the railroad

george pendleton white supportive of bringing proposed charlotte columbia rail line through rock hill. on october 10, 1848 issued contract charlotte , south carolina railroad company. contract excavate , grade part of railroad.


rock hill academy

rock hill s first school opened in september 1854. built on land donated ann hutchison white. land covered pine grove, leading many locals refer school pine grove academy instead of official name. school located approximately 250 yards northeast of white home , half mile railroad depot. 1856 school had 60 male pupils. prior this, students had gone ebenezer academy. in 1856, pine grove academy girls opened well.


the incorporation of rock hill

rock hill not officially incorporated town until february 26, 1870. third time local residents had tried town incorporated.


the white family divided decision. members of family, james spratt white, in favor of incorporation. other members, such ann hutchison white , son a. h. white, against incorporation. white family owned significant portion of land incorporated part of town; ann wanted avoid taxes result incorporation.


in response petition local residents asking incorporation, several prominent residents sent counter-petition against incorporation. 7 people, owned 4/5th of land become rock hill, gave several reasons opposing incorporation. among them opposition expense of resurfacing muddy streets, lack of perceived positive benefit incorporation, fears incompetent men find way onto town council, , worries unable afford high taxes. town incorporated state legislature anyway.
