the funafuti conservation area called kogatapu conservation area or funafuti marine conservation area . 6 islets (motu, in tuvaluan language) included in funafuti conservation area: tepuka vili vili, (also called tepuka savilivili); fualopa; fuafatu; vasafua; fuagea (also called fuakea) , tefala. vasafua severely damaged cyclone pam. coconut palms washed away, leaving islet sand bar.

the tuvalu national biodiversity strategy , action plan of 2009 describes marine environment comprising 6 major ecosystem types: oceanic, outer reef, lagoonal, reef, lagoon floor, , patch reefs, plus natural channels between ocean , lagoon. says these ecosystems produce sediment required island building , maintenance , support communities of corals, other invertebrates, algae, plankton, fish , marine mammals , reptiles.

coconut crabs (birgus latro) live on islets, nesting sites green sea turtle (chelonia mydas) ( fonu in tuvaluan). iucn red list identifies green turtle being found in tuvalu. green turtle recognised critically endangered. secretariat of pacific regional environment programme (sprep) lists 2 additional turtle species being found in tuvalu: hawksbill sea turtle (eretmochelys imbricate) , leatherback sea turtle (dermochelys coriacea), both species being recognised critically endangered.

the marine environment of kogatapu includes reef, lagoon, channel , ocean; , home many species of fish, corals, algae , invertebrates. surveys prior 1999 identified 76 species of indicator fish, 141 species of food fish , 149 mobile invertebrates such crabs , sea cucumbers. 2007 survey established fish populations had increased result of funafuti conservation area. large-sized individual fishes of highly prized target food species, such grouper , snapper observed; presence of many large fish of desirable target food species indicates there low fishing pressure in funafuti conservation area, although enforcement conservation rangers of no-fishing rules necessary preserve fish stock.

surveys carried out in may 2010 of reef habitats of nanumea, nukulaelae , funafuti (including funafuti conservation area) , total of 317 fish species recorded during tuvalu marine life study. surveys identified 66 species had not been recorded in tuvalu, brings total number of identified species 607.

low densities of reef sharks recorded in tuvalu marine life study. 4 species of reef shark have been identified: grey reef shark (carcharhinus amblyrhynchos), blacktip reef shark (carcharhinus melanopterus), whitetip reef shark (triaenodon obesus) , lemon shark (negaprion brevirostris), listed on iucn red list of threatened species, ‘near threatened’ species.

the tuvalu marine life study recorded low densities of 2 species of rays: manta ray (manta birostris) , spotted eagle ray (aetobatus narinari), both listed on iucn red list of threatened species, ‘near threatened’ species.
