history

in 1827, john slade offered grant of 640 acres (2.6 km) appears not have taken offer. on 11 august 1843, robert henderson granted 640 acres (2.6 km) in known budgewoi, had dairy.


in 1856 henderson holdings purchased john hargraves built noraville . wollombi aboriginal tribe members known have worked on property. sources state hargraves befriended tribe members. cattle grazed far buff point , elizabeth bay.


norah head lighthouse built , opened in 1903 after vessel wreckages.


originally used grazing cattle , agriculture, 1930s budgewoi becoming known holiday destination , families come sydney camp on weekends , during holidays. however, getting area not easy did not become popular other places on central coast.


surrounding areas

chinese fishermen worked tuggerah lakes area in late 1850s, in particular, known canton beach @ toukley. while not confirmed, believed name derived from. base catching , curing fish shipped queensland, goldfields , china.


1889 saw opening of railway sydney newcastle , wyong turning proper township opening of royal hotel , first post office established. railway making of timber industry. in hey day, around turn of century, wyong exported thousands of railway sleepers. in 1904 lighthouse @ norah head built , first few houses began appear @ entrance. tourists making trip tuggerah lakes - boat, horse-drawn vehicle , train. went fishing , long bracing walks along beaches. slowly, surely, population of shire grew. roads, bridges , boarding houses built. after war, central coast came of age. event marked creation of new shire, wyong, out of old erina shire in 1947.


schools

the budgewoi public school built in 1961, first headmaster being mr r. passlow. had staff of 5 , 150 pupils in original block on corner of woolana , lukela avenues. official record of school states teacher appointed in january 1960 , first class started in february 1960. possible these pupils taught @ budgewoi hall, 1 available @ time. alternative have been home or marquee.


with no high school located in town, has been necessary students bused schools in surrounding area; wyong high school until opening of gorokan high school in 1976 , northlakes high school since opening in 1981.


churches

st john s budgewoi had church of england services held fortnightly in community hall during 1950s , 1960s. budgewoi ladies guild formed buy block of land, purchased $423. in december 1971 st john evangelist budgewoi dedicated , 20 people attended , worshipped. in 2006 church buildings in need of refurbishment , upgrading meet requirements of wyong shire council , due short notice given council , significant funds needed parish council reluctantly agreed had no option close church public worship. final service held in st john s church budgewoi on 10 september 2006 , formally closed assistant bishop of newcastle, graeme rutherford, on day.
