by 1979, sambo s had 1,117 outlets in 47 american states. in late 1970s, controversy on chain s name drew protests , lawsuits in communities viewed term sambo pejorative towards african-americans. several of restaurants opened or renamed jolly tiger in locations local community passed resolutions forbidding use of original name or refused grant chain permits.


there other corporate level decisions being made @ time led sambo s corporate demise. there pressure take sambo s more normal salaried manager compensation package. unique fraction of action promotion – whereby managers entitled 20% of profits stores, employees allowed bid percentage of remaining profits – company expansion plan , growth of company outpaced control. in march 1981, in further attempt give chain new image company again renamed locations, time no place sam s . november 1981, company filed bankruptcy. neither name change nor bankruptcy protection reversed downward trend, , 1982 original sambo s @ 216 west cabrillo boulevard in santa barbara, california, closed doors. february 1983, 618 of locations renamed season s friendly eating. several locations sold denny s, including fort lauderdale store. bakers square s parent company acquired sambo s in california in october 1984. many sambo s locations converted bakers square restaurants , ones weren t sold other chains, including denny s.


sam battistone, jr. original owner of new orleans jazz in nba. later moved team utah , sold it. battistone s grandson, restaurateur chad stevens, owns remaining sambo s.

the sovereign building in 2011 the whitehall mall store sold leh s department store, several years flagship store on hamilton street in allentown remained vacant. added national register of historic places in 1979. in december 1982 allentown store purchased sovereign realty , development. building renovated , reopened sovereign building in may 1984. renovations included glass-arched entrance pedestrian plaza between hamilton , court streets leading grapefruit-domed lobby decor of antique brass, mirrors, greenery , wing-backed chairs. main floor , basement developed retail spaces, while upper floors turned 42 private office suites. sovereign later went financial difficulties , building sold @ sheriffs sale on 22 september 1989. today building operated office building owner resides in philadelphia.
