currently, parma has no local school system. students attend new madrid county central r-i school district in new madrid, missouri.


history

after founding of community of parma, rapid growth led formation of school system. late 1890s 1910, various 1 room structures in parma area utilized education. first structure strictly school purposes erected in 1910. 1935, increasing student population demanded need larger high school building. 9.9 square feet per pupil, amendment no. 3 or school bond placed on ballot. after summer of strong campaigning school district , other community leaders, amendment no. 3 passed vote of 284-29 on october 19, 1935. construction commenced in fall of 1936 , first classes began in fall of 1937. original 1933 gymnasium burned in 1944. once again, citizens of parma banded fund construction of new gymnasium completed fall of 1944. athletic teams, known parma pirates, pride of school , surrounding community. in 1980, parma consolidated school district no. 5 consolidated new madrid county central r-i school district. on next several decades, school complex fell state of disrepair. major fire in fall of 2010 brought entire high school complex ground.

in summer of 2016, several phs alumni , former community leaders formed parma school memorial committee. successful in efforts raise funds construct large monument on grounds of old high school building. memorial dedicated on july 1, 2017.

Sovereign Building Zollinger-Harned Company Building

the sovereign building in 2011 the whitehall mall store sold leh s department store, several years flagship store on hamilton street in allentown remained vacant. added national register of historic places in 1979. in december 1982 allentown store purchased sovereign realty , development. building renovated , reopened sovereign building in may 1984. renovations included glass-arched entrance pedestrian plaza between hamilton , court streets leading grapefruit-domed lobby decor of antique brass, mirrors, greenery , wing-backed chairs. main floor , basement developed retail spaces, while upper floors turned 42 private office suites. sovereign later went financial difficulties , building sold @ sheriffs sale on 22 september 1989. today building operated office building owner resides in philadelphia.
