the solana family first recorded in 13th century related liaño, village situated on outskirts of santander; members of local hidalguia, representatives later many times noted civil , religious servants in region. in mid-18th solanas held mayorazgo in liaño quarter of socabarga; first settle in nearby villaescusa marcial’s great-grandfather, roque de solana río. in 19th century held number of estates in province , grew cortes deputy in 1810s. son, pedro solana collado (1801-1868), served infantry colonel , sided carlists during first carlist war; exiled, in 1840s returned following amnesty, engaged in carlist conspiracy of 1855. married in 1846, built house on rosequillo estate in la concha de villaescusa. son , marcial’s father, marcial rufo solana gonzález-camino (1847-1885), multiplied family wealth trading flour in cuba; upon return spain in 1879 married cousin, elvira irene gonzález-camino de velasco (1861-1939), herself descendant well-to-do cantabrian bourgeoisie family.


though marcial rufo , irene held number of estates, lived @ calle calderon 5 in santander. had 2 children, marcial’s sister born posthumously; siblings raised in fervently catholic ambience. in 1890 marcial augusto justino took entry exams instituto de segunda ensañanza of santander, unclear reasons pursued curriculum jesuits in orduña; obtained bachillerato, confirmed instituto de bilbao, in 1896. same year entered jesuit deusto institute; in 1899 graduated sobresaliente in filosofia y letras , in 1902, sobresaliente, in law. spared military service commenced doctoral research in madrid. in 1904 solana obtained phd laurels – sobresaliente – in law, , in 1906 paired – sobresaliente – 1 in philosophy, in madrid.

though scholar in law, solana did not enter colegio de abogados , did not practice, same press titles referred him ilustrado abogado . commenced professional career neither. wealthy man inherited number of plots, 56 in santander province alone, lived off land rent. owner of number of mansions dubbed palacios, key ones in esles, socabarga , villaescusa, solana lived in santander, in last decades of life spending summers in favorite estate, granja santa maría in vizcaínos de la sierra, in burgos province. has never married , had no children. biographer claims solana led austere life, spending money on books, travelling , investments in rural economy, though in 1920s noted 1 of few cars owners in santander province. solana’s best known relative maternal cousin, josé luis zamanillo, carlist , francoist politician known in 1960s , 1970s.
