Roughness parameters Surface metrology

the real surface geometry complicated finite number of parameters cannot provide full description. if number of parameters used increased, more accurate description can obtained. 1 of reasons introducing new parameters surface evaluation. surface roughness parameters categorised 3 groups according functionality. these groups defined amplitude parameters, spacing parameters, , hybrid parameters.

profile roughness parameters

parameters used describe surfaces largely statistical indicators obtained many samples of surface height. examples include:

this small subset of available parameters described in standards asme b46.1 , iso 4287. of these parameters originated capabilities of profilometers , other mechanical probe systems. in addition, new measures of surface dimensions have been developed more directly related measurements made possible high-definition optical gauging technologies.

most of these parameters can estimated using surfcharj plugin [1] imagej.

areal surface parameters

the surface roughness can calculated on area. gives sa instead of ra values. iso 25178 series describes these roughness values in detail. advantage on profile parameters are:

more significant values
more relation real function possible
faster measurement actual instruments possible (optical areal based instruments can measure sa in higher speed ra.

surfaces have fractal properties, multi-scale measurements can made such length-scale fractal analysis or area-scale fractal analysis.
