the royal ordnance factory closed in 1957. however, boom in construction trade , many others in post-war years, site found many new industries requiring space offer.


george moore (founder of moores furniture group) bought site in 1960s , converted trading estate. moores furniture group furniture factory situated on estate, leeds city council household recycling centre, sewage works , many other small businesses situated.


a major development, , biggest employer, british library lending division, british library s second site after st pancras site in central london. british library boston spa, known, housed in large eight-storey concrete building (with windows set in narrow slits avoid light damage books) , many smaller, newer buildings around it.



the buywell retail park on trading estate


the thorp arch retail park occupies semi-underground bunkers , many of retail outlets have grassy banks exterior walls. retail park houses brooks discount retailers, dfs (formerly northern upholstery), power electrical superstore (formerly empire direct , miller brothers), sofa centre, greenery garden centre, car showroom , cafe.


the retail park had branch of texas homecare, because of small-sized units, occupied 2 units several hundred yards apart closed. bargain street, (a defunct west yorkshire discount clothes , household retailer) had premises.


during 2008-2009 uk retail crisis, 2 retail chains, land of leather , empire direct, closed.
