geology

the village on east-west running boulder clay (middle-pleistocene till) ridge sitting on belt of jurassic kimmerigian clays running south-west wash. east north-south running belt of geologically more recent upper-cretaceous lower greensand capped lower-cretaceous gault clay; whole area surrounded more recent fen deposits. west, again running north-east—south-west, scarp belt of middle-jurassic sedimentary rocks including limestone , sandstone.


the flat fenland countryside around village, typical part of region, lies 16 feet (5 m) above sea-level. highest point in village 23 feet (7 m) above sea-level , highest point in area 85 feet (26 m) @ ely, seven-mile (11 km) north-east. in contrast, highest point in cambridgeshire, 479 feet (146 m) above sea-level, @ great chishill, 21 miles (34 km) due south. holme @ nine feet (2.75 m) below sea-level east cambridgeshire s (and united kingdom s) lowest point, , 18 miles (29 km) north-west.
