Geography Downtown Waterbury Historic District

among buildings large parking lots, , 2 small parks, waterbury green , library park, provide open space. terrain flat, former flood plain of river valley. south interstate 84 crosses city , valley on elevated viaduct, affording panoramic view of skyline eastbound traffic on upper level.


the northwestern corner intersection of state , west main streets. district boundary follows middle of west main 2 blocks park place, turns north, excluding mattatuck museum arts , history center , including immaculate conception church , other properties on north side of west main. @ north main street turns south again, east along east main eastern corner of district, open square @ junction of street , north , south elm streets.


from there follows diagonal course along property lines, crossing scovill , south main streets junction of bank , grand streets. there follows grand westward, including properties on south side west of cottage place. detours down field street in order include armory, of library park , former american brass company headquarters. after following meadow street grand, follows state street northwest corner.


leavenworth street, in middle of district, divides 2 major uses of district. east more commercial blocks, buildings packed densely, covering of lots, centered on exchange place, blocks between east main, leavenworth, bank , grand. west, buildings institutional, dominated row of buildings forming part of waterbury municipal center complex, large setbacks street , each other. there commercial buildings among them, , 1 major institutional building, post office, located in eastern half.
