the proposed kaminoseki nuclear power plant built on landfill in national park in japan s well-known , picturesque seto inland sea. 3 decades, local residents, fishermen, , environmental activists have opposed plant. inland sea has been site of intense seismic activity, yet utility involved continues plans. in january 2011, 5 japanese young people held hunger strike more week, outside prefectural government offices in yamaguchi city, protest site preparation planned kaminoseki plant.


the possibility of magnitude 8-plus earthquake in tokai region near hamaoka plant brought public s attention geologist ishibashi katsuhiko in 1970s . on 10 april 2011 protesters called hamaoka nuclear-power plant shut down. on 6 may 2011, prime minister naoto kan ordered hamaoka nuclear power plant shut down earthquake of magnitude 8.0 or higher hit area within next 30 years. kan wanted avoid possible repeat of fukushima disaster. on 9 may 2011, chubu electric decided comply government request. kan later called new energy policy less reliance on nuclear power. in july 2011, mayor in shizuoka prefecture , group of residents filed lawsuit seeking permanent decommissioning of reactors @ hamaoka nuclear power plant.


in 1982, chugoku electric power company proposed building nuclear power plant near iwaishima, many residents opposed idea, , island’s fishing cooperative voted overwhelmingly against plans. in january 1983, 400 islanders staged protest march, first of more 1,000 protests islanders conducted. since fukushima nuclear disaster in march 2011 there has been wider opposition construction plans plant.
