austria largely mountainous country due location in alps. central eastern alps, northern limestone alps , southern limestone alps partly in austria. of total area of austria (84,000 km or 32,433 sq mi), quarter can considered low lying, , 32% of country below 500 metres (1,640 ft). alps of western austria give way low lands , plains in eastern part of country.


austria lies between latitudes 46° , 49° n, , longitudes 9° , 18° e.


it can divided 5 areas, biggest being eastern alps, constitute 62% of nation s total area. austrian foothills @ base of alps , carpathians account around 12% , foothills in east , areas surrounding periphery of pannoni low country amount 12% of total landmass. second greater mountain area (much lower alps) situated in north. known austrian granite plateau, located in central area of bohemian mass , accounts 10% of austria. austrian portion of vienna basin comprises remaining 4%.

phytogeographically, austria belongs central european province of circumboreal region within boreal kingdom. according wwf, territory of austria can subdivided 4 ecoregions: central european mixed forests, pannonian mixed forests, alps conifer , mixed forests , western european broadleaf forests.




























climate

the greater part of austria lies in cool/temperate climate zone, humid westerly winds predominate. three-quarters of country dominated alps, alpine climate predominant. in east—in pannonian plain , along danube valley—the climate shows continental features less rain alpine areas. although austria cold in winter (−10 0 °c), summer temperatures can relatively high, average temperatures in mid-20s , highest temperature of 40.5 °c (105 °f) in august 2013.


according koppen climate classification austria has following climate types: oceanic (cfb), cool/warm-summer humid continental (dfb), subarctic/subalpine (dfc), tundra/alpine (et) , ice-cap (ef). important note though austria in general not cold in winter rather cool in summer @ higher altitudes. subarctic , tundra climates seen around alps warmer in winter normal elsewhere due in part oceanic influence on part of europe.
