coming in aftermath of fighting around isurava, engagement around eora fought between 31 august , 5 september maroubra force fought disengage japanese pursuit. heavily depleted australian 2/14th, 2/16th , 39th infantry battalions delayed 2 battalions colonel kiyomi yazawa s 41st infantry regiment. subsequently allowed australians fall further towards efogi.


throughout battle, 2/16th , 2/14th infantry battalions employed rearguard, 2/14th in reserve. action, part, conducted each successively pulling through reserve position designated blocking position , holding until assigned time before moving further further. on evening of 31 august, horii appointed 41st infantry regiment vanguard – replacing 144th had led force toward isurava. battle developed in several phases – substantially defined delaying positions occupied 2/16th infantry battalion.


the 2/16th infantry battalion covered withdrawal of maroubra force isurava (and particularly, wounded battle) toward eora village series of positions between alola , eora village. final of these, halfway between 2 localities, quit @ 2 am on 1 september. rearguard position closely pursued retired toward eora village. arriving midday 1 september, 2/16th infantry battalion adopted defensive position on bald spur on southern side of creek overlooked crossing , village. 2/14th infantry battalion 1 kilometre (1,100 yd) south along track. 39th infantry battalion had been holding position @ eora village. once 2/16th infantry battalion had withdrawn village, 39th ordered proceed kagi , hold there.


the 2/16th infantry battalion s position ranged japanese artillery, while 2 companies attempted flanking move east. these attackers, having not been engaged during campaign, cautious in approaching australian position. nonetheless, australians aggressively probed through night. battalion held until designated time disengage – 6:00 am on 2 september. battalion withdrew through reserve, position on high point of track 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) north of templeton s crossing. 2/14th infantry battalion in contact retired on position. japanese advance, led 2/41st battalion, probed australian 2/16th infantry battalion s flanks , threatened isolate it. rough path, circling east , dump 1, found. dump 1 first point, heading north, track crosses eora creek , 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) direct distance south of templeton s crossing. potts ordered 2/16th infantry battalion hold until dusk. 2/14th needed time realign plan withdrawal along alternative route , able cover templeton s crossing. 2/16th commenced withdrawal, observed , came under attack.


the 2/14th infantry battalion had occupied position on high ground south of dump 1. 2/16th infantry battalion arrived there @ 4:00 pm on 3 september , took on position, 2/14th retiring myola. straight after departure of 2/14th, 2/16th contacted. flanks threatened, able withdraw upon , break contact toward myola. potts reconciled abandon myola, destroy material , withdraw toward efogi , approaching 2/27th infantry battalion had been released join other battalions of 21st brigade.
