anderson s interest in international affairs had been stirred trip europe in 1937, in germany first saw totalitarian state in action, recalled. on return spoke league of women voters, fighting strong isolationist policies of time.
anderson helped create minnesota democratic-farmer-labor party in 1944. 4 years later, 1 of few women, elected office in national democratic party. in 1948, dfl split national democratic party in controversy on goals , ideology, supported hubert h. humphrey. rewarded support in 1949, when appointed president truman u.s. ambassador denmark (1949–1953). truman s appointment made first woman appointed chief of mission @ ambassador level in history. (the first female chief of mission @ minister rank ruth bryan owen in 1933).
she later appointed kennedy ambassador bulgaria (1962–1964). anderson became first american woman represent united states in country allied soviet union.
after retirement these posts, president johnson appointed anderson united nations trusteeship council , year later served on united nations committee decolonization.
