2012 royal hoax call incident 2Day FM



in december 2012, hot 30 program hosts, mel greig , mike christian, obtained information duchess of cambridge s health impersonating queen elizabeth ii , prince of wales in phone call king edward vii s hospital sister agnes, duchess being treated hyperemesis gravidarum. call, made @ 5.30 am london time (gmt) on 4 december, answered @ reception nurse jacintha saldanha no switchboard receptionist on duty. saldanha transferred call nurse treating duchess, gave details of condition. christian, had started on show day earlier, proposed calling hospital in hope of getting duchess on air. stunt cleared 2day fm lawyers prior airing. when hospital chief executive john lofthouse learned prank, condemned act of journalistic trickery no nurse should have deal with.


while hospital has expressed concern prank may have broken law, ceo of southern cross austereo, rhys holleran, stated did not believe laws broken. later, holleran said station officials tried contact nurses voices recorded @ least 5 times prior greenlighting stunt air. however, @ least 1 legal expert told abc news stunt may have broken new south wales state law forbidding recording of private conversations without other party s consent. @ federal court hearing became known australian media watchdog australian communications , media authority (acma) had prepared confidential, preliminary report saying radio royal hoax broke law . 2day fm acted illegally airing phone call without consent.


the king edward vii hospital has stated radio station did not speak in hospital senior management, or @ company handles our media enquiries following hoax call.


just before 9.30 am (gmt) on 7 december, saldanha found dead @ accommodation near hospital in suspected suicide. police said death being treated unexplained , duke , duchess of cambridge said saddened news. 2day fm continued promote prank time after saldanha s death. holleran said presenters both shocked , not return radio show until further notice. advertisers boycotting station or threatening so, southern cross austereo suspended advertising on 2day fm until @ least 10 december.


the hospital chairman, lord glenarthur, wrote letter southern cross austereo protesting greig , christian s actions: king edward vii s hospital cares sick people, , extremely foolish of presenters consider trying lie way through 1 of our patients, let alone make call. southern cross austereo chairman max moore-wilton wrote lord glenarthur promising immediate action , full review of process broadcast cleared. @ emergency meeting, austereo announced advertising remain suspended on 2day fm until @ least 12 december. formally cancelled hot 30 program , suspended prank-call stunts on austereo stations, effective immediately. night, greig , christian gave first interviews since saldanha s death, telling 9 network s current affair , 7 network s today tonight still badly shaken on tragedy. austereo cancelled yearly christmas party employees in sydney cluster out of respect saldanha s family , donated money planned spend on party beyond blue , lifeline.


on 12 december, southern cross austereo announced advertising on 2day fm resume next day. donate remainder of station advertising proceeds 2012—a minimum of $a500,000 (£320,000)—to memorial fund benefit saldanha s family.

on 13 december, abc news reported australian communications , media authority opened formal investigation prank call. same day, guardian reported 3 suicide notes left jacintha before death, 2 of found @ scene , 1 in belongings. said 1 of them dealt prank call, contained requests funeral , third critical of staff of hospital.


on 27 january 2013, southern cross austereo announced on facebook page hot 30 show responsible prank not returning, , instead replaced new, networked night show titled bump show hosted o loughlin. brief period replaced international syndication of ryan seacrest.


mike christian returned broadcasting in february 2013. mel greig, however, received counselling depression, never went on air , quit job station after year. reported had objected broadcast overruled station managers.
