history

the history of area known south perth before permanent european settlement broadly similar in other parts of became swan river colony. area inhabited peoples of noongar tribes, , had little contact other peoples. dutch , french explorers reported presence, no recorded contact made. no contact known have been made travellers other country. dutch expedition commanded willem de vlaming in 1697 first discover major river , note presence of black swans on river. named swan river.

after permanent settlement of british , establishment of swan river colony, development tended take place north rather south of swan river in town of perth , in fremantle, port suburb. area unofficially known south perth relatively untouched. 1831, land along river frontage had been allocated amongst 7 people, , land being partially used agriculture , dairy farms. mill built in 1833 , ferry across swan river via narrows established.

there conflict between european settlers , indigenous australians, in 1 of leaders chief known yagan. after death, local leadership went chief variously known galute or kalyute. led further resistance, countered punitive expedition, resulted in deaths of fifteen aboriginal people , end of organised resistance.


by 1850s, there further development of area, more ferry connections , construction of causeway , canning bridge. area further surveyed , lots allocated pensioners. 1858, area officially marked on maps south perth , roads had been constructed.


the 1860s saw realisation large-scale farming in district had no future, although dairying, timber cutting , vegetable growing continued. 1880s, number of chinese gardeners had arrived , set market gardens on land on foreshore, between suburban road (now mill point road) , swan river. after discovery of gold in kalgoorlie in 1893, number of chinese, had been unable take miners rights in goldfields racial reasons, joined them in south perth. chinese worked hard , grew quality fruit , vegetables, local population happy buy. in 1920s, chinese started market produce wider population of perth via james street markets. chinese market gardens operated many years, despite many attempts local authorities serve them notices allegeing uncleanliness or health hazards. lasted until 1950s before dismantled.


with of convict labour, district received more settlement , better roads. nevertheless, south perth area still had small population.

the real estate boom of 1880s, coincided discovery of gold in kimberley saw slow appreciable growth in number of residents. several of perth s more substantial citizens saw south perth peaceful , tranquil suburb, , end of 1890s, population 400, many elegant homes. zoological gardens , royal perth golf club opened in 1898 , area became popular tourists town of perth across river.
