on bitterly chill night, ancient beadsman performs penances while in castle of madeline s warlike family; meanwhile, alcohol-fueled revelry has begun among family. madeline pines love of porphyro, sworn enemy kin. old dames have told may receive sweet dreams of love him if on night, st. agnes eve, retires bed under proper ritual of silence , supine receptiveness.


later night, porphyro makes way castle , braves entry, seeking out angela, elderly woman friendly family, , importuning lead him madeline s room @ night may gaze upon sleeping form. angela persuaded difficulty, saying fears damnation if porphyro not afterward marry girl.


concealed in ornate carven closet in madeline s room, porphyro watches madeline makes ready bed, , then, beholding full beauty in moonlight, creeps forth sleeps prepare feast of rare delicacies. madeline wakes , sees before same image has seen in dream and, thinking porphyro part of it, receives him bed. awakening in full , realizing mistake, tells porphyro cannot hate him deception since heart in his, if goes leaves behind dove forlorn , lost / sick unpruned wing .


porphyro declares love madeline , promises home him on southern moors. escape castle past insensate revelers , flee night. beadsman, after thousand aves told, / aye unsought slept among ashes cold .


angela s death, beadsman s, revealed in poem s final stanza.
