gameplay

four contestants, each designated different color (red, green, white, , blue), compete. game played on grid of twenty-five numbered boxes in manner similar game reversi.


the first question puzzle shown on video screen; first player buzz in correct answer awarded center #13 box. after this, contestants introduced. point on, players referred designated color (in japanese, red aka, green midori, white shiro, , blue ao ).


from point on, questions may take of several forms, including general trivia, audio question, or video or picture question or puzzle. players may buzz in @ time after announcer begins reading question. buzzing in correct answer allows player capture 1 of boxes on game board. in addition, if capturing box, player brackets 1 or more boxes held opposing players, whether in same row, column, or diagonal, player steals boxes.










when capturing box, players must:



make capture steal box opponent
failing that, make capture set steal on correct answer.
failing both of above, capture box touches @ least 1 other box held player.

any time contestant answers question incorrectly, other on first question or puzzle, player locked out answering 2 questions (originally three). if question answered incorrectly, play ends on question, , new question asked; on puzzle, play continues until answers correctly. (players locked out must stand chair , step away buzzers.)


attack chance

after twenty boxes filled on board, bell rings, signals start of attack chance. contestant gives next correct answer after attack chance announced captures box usual, attacks box held opponent. box attacked turned yellow, , can captured contestant normal. if contestant won attack chance 1 territory on board, or must attack or own box.


end of game

the game ends when board filled, or when time runs out (signaled westminster chimes). contestant holds boxes declared winner. if game ends in tie, tied contestants play additional sudden-death questions until 1 of them gives correct answer, winning game. each contestant wins amount of money each box held @ end of game. 1975 1977, players received ¥2,000; on years, value increased ¥4,000 per box, ¥6,000, ¥8,000 , ¥10,000. however, if 1 contestant holds 25 boxes (a perfect game), winnings increased ¥500,000. along cash each box, players receive special prizes, along performance fee of ¥5,000, , winning player given chance win vacation in bonus game.


bonus round

the week s winner shown short film overseas travel destination; or able view film through boxes or has held @ end of game. @ end of film, contestant has 5 seconds identify location. if successful, or wins trip destination.


in more recent years, object became identifying famous person based on film, , trip on offer announced beforehand (usually mediterranean cruise).
