early life , police career

born in albany, new york in 1815, daniel carpenter moved new york city young man , engaged in jewelry manufacturing until joining municipal police force around 1847. under command of george washington matsell, carpenter appointed captain of fifth ward. 1 of important posts in city, area populated many members of new york s prominent citizens. carpenter described patient, cool , inflexible , administration on fifth ward largely successful in keeping order , quiet. throughout career, described noble, manly, unselfish gentleman - man in corruption of great city, far beyond suspicion vindictive tongue not breathe against him .


police & draft riots

upon formation of metropolitan police department in 1857, carpenter 1 of majority of officers joined new police force. during police riot of 1857, carpenter reportedly able enter city hall , officially serve arrest warrant mayor fernando wood , escort him metropolitan police headquarters. becoming knowledgeable of new york underworld, appointed police inspector shortly after police riot.


during new york draft riots, carpenter 1 of active officers fought against rioters. after superintendent john kennedy attacked mob , hospitalized, overall command of police force fell commissioner thomas coxon acton , john g. bergen while carpenter took command of police squads on streets. memorable action during riot defense of new york financial district , u.s. sub-treasury. drillmaster sergeant theron s. copeland, assembled remained of police force, 125 men, , in brief speech officers said going put down mob, , take no prisoners . carpenter , copeland led small squad through mulberry , bleecker streets until meeting thousands of rioters marching down broadway. although both sides armed clubs, male , female rioters possessed crowbars, swords , pistols. mob, numbered as 10,000 rioters, reportedly filled street corner corner , head of mob carrying american flag , large sign no draft written on it.


he deployed men in 4 lines of skirmishers across broadway, , marching northward, made contact rioters @ amity street south of la farge house rioters attacking negro servants. carpenter led first assault, supported patrolman doyle , thompson, , supposedly killed first thug challenged him bludgeon. patrolman thompson seized american flag while doyle killed rioter holding no draft sign. front rank of mob had been halted moment responded throwing brickbats , paving stones. several officers wounded in assault, rest of squad closed ranks , continued march clubbing rioters each step. mob gradually began give way and, after 15 minutes of heavy fighting, rioters broke , scattered in direction officers following them sidestreets while dead , wounded lay on streets , sidewalks. farthest rioters advance, remaining mobs being confined central manhattan.


he , inspector john s. folk faced rioters had fled new york tribune after being driven away captain warlow , captain thorne. sweeping city hall park of remaining rioters, folk returned brooklyn while carpenter left behind 50 men guard new york tribune offices while , rest of squad went on other threatened parts of city. later joined captain john j. jourdan made tour of notorious fourth ward , waterfront district.


on second day of riot, @ 6:00 am, carpenter left metropolitan headquarters squad of 200 officers , marched uptown rioters had appeared on second avenue , threatening union steam works. moving detachment second avenue block below union steam works, carpenter once again deployed men lines of skirmishers 2 lines of men marching northward. rioters, had grown more confrontational towards police, armed muskets, pistols , swords while others invaded nearby homes , buildings throw bricks , stones rooftops. police met little resistance @ first ut met @ thirty-second street shower of brink , stone squad injuring many police officers. mob had been closing in behind, surprised police attacking front , rear, carpenter , men fought fiercely managed clear street after 15 minutes of fighting. frightened mob huddled in small groups hundred feet police, carpenter ordered 50 of men surrounding buildings chase out rooftop rioters. many of rioters fell roofs , killed while others managed escape street caught carpenter , men. during engagement nearby saloon taken on rioters armed muskets , pistols, carpenter s men able force them out without casualties.


when carpenter saw colonel h.j. o brien , 150 infantrymen, sent major general c.w. sandford, launched second assault against rioters. in spite of heavy fire rioters, both muskets , debris thrown rooftops, carpenter , o brien able defeat rioters of artillery fire under lieutenant eagleson. after rioters had been dispersed, carpenter continued on tour eastern part of city , attacked several smaller mobs still remaining in streets. later night, , squad arrived clear out brooks brothers clothing store after several officers had been shot , killed rioters looting store.


death

on afternoon of november 15, 1866, carpenter @ metropolitan police headquarters on mulberry street oversaw police preparations grand banquet held @ metropolitan hotel in honor of cyrus w. field. @ around 2:00 pm, carpenter left station home on west thirty-fourth street. returned headquarters after having dinner family however, met captain lord of sanitary police @ corner of crosby , bleecker streets, captain observed strange manner in him , took carpenter home on twentieth street. carpenter rested on sofa in parlor while lord had dinner. when lord returned after eating meal, carpenter had become gravely ill. both physician , wife called carpenter died before either arrived. succeeded george washington walling, became police chief of nypd.
