the 16th century bulwark-like fortress severely damaged during great earthquake of 1755. restored in mid 20th century, there still 16th-century turret present. after passing through thick tunnel entrance, 1 sees giant pebble compass rose (rosa dos ventos) of 43 m diameter. compass roses divided 32 segments, strangely 1 has 40 segments (probably error of 20th-century restorers). unlikely date time of henry navigator.


the much-restored church nossa senhora da graça dates 1579. replaced original church of infante dom henrique of 1459. damaged earthquake of 1755. alterations church made, such building of new bell tower on old charnel house of cemetery. there still set of tombstones present. inside unpretentious church, 17th century baroque retable above altar originates capela de santa catarina forte de belixe (st. catherine s chapel in belixe fortress), while polychrome statues of st. vincent , st. francis once part of franciscan convent on cape st. vincent.


next church stands replica stone standard (padrão), used explorers claim newly discovered territory.
