through original talent, lively games , prolific teachings, many russians regard mikhail chigorin founder of school of chess , later become known soviet school of chess. overshadowed extent in 1920s exciting new theories of hypermodern movement, chigorin s influence nevertheless demands prominent , permanent place in soviet chess hegemony of 20th century.


chigorin has several chess openings or variations of openings named after him, 2 important being chigorin variation of ruy lopez (1.e4 e5 2.nf3 nc6 3.bb5 a6 4.ba4 nf6 5.o-o be7 6.re1 b5 7.bb3 d6 8.c3 o-o 9.h3 na5 10.bc2 c5 11.d4 qc7) , chigorin defence queen s gambit (1.d4 d5 2.c4 nc6). whilst former has remained popular through 1900s, latter struggled attract great many devotees until relatively recently. igor miladinović has used chigorin defence great regularity, current revival owes efforts of alexander morozevich, has championed opening both in play , in book - chigorin defence according morozevich (published 2007).
