the paper s first editor-in-chief jihad khazen, columnist , editor emeritus rival pan-arab daily al-hayat, gave credit hisham hafiz, subsequent support of brother mohammed ali hafez, initial idea of establishing arabic-language newspaper in london. daily launched in 1978. former editor-in-chief othman al omeir has likewise given credit brothers, hisham , mohammad hafiz, founding , overseeing paper. el khazen, brothers set out prove value of idea through number of trial issues then-crown prince , later king fahd, had warmed thought lost enthusiasm. khazen gave credit then-saudi ambassador london , then-deputy minister of information in helping gain fahd s verbal approval issuing newspaper while prince on official visit england.
