charles goodnight s chuckwagon named in 2003 official state vehicle of texas; exhibit @ texas cowboy hall of fame in fort worth stockyards in fort worth.


the american chuckwagon association organization dedicated preservation of heritage of chuckwagon. members participate in chuckwagon cook-offs throughout of us. through these events, members educate public on history , traditions surrounding chuckwagon.


at chuckwagon cook off, each wagon judged on authenticity of wagon. wagons must in sound drivable condition, equipment , construction available in late 1800s. contents of chuck-box, including utensils, must match have been used during era. wagons judged on attire of cooks. typical chuckwagon cookoff composed of 5 food categories: meat (usually chicken-fried steak), beans (pinto), bread (sourdough or yeast), dessert (usually peach cobbler), , potatoes. team of judges evaluates entries each wagon, giving each score. once scores tabulated, prizes awarded top wagons.


one of famous chuckwagon cook-offs lincoln county cowboy symposium. held annually 2 decades, event attracts thousands ruidoso, new mexico.


among few chuckwagon cook-offs east of mississippi river takes place during saddleup! each february in pigeon forge, tennessee. held outside great smoky mountains national park, saddleup! features cowboy symphony , cowboy church services on four-day period.


the academy of western artists presents annual award outstanding chuckwagon cooking honors in other fields relating culture of american cowboy.
