biography
early life

soros born schwartz pal on june 5, 1926, in budapest, hungary, schwartz tivadar, lawyer , author, , erzsébet szűcs, daughter of owner of fabric store. father had been captured russians during world war , held in detention camp in siberia.


tivadar soros, changed family s surname schwartz soros in 1936 escape antisemitism , expansion of nazism in europe. tivadar soros forged paperwork, giving family alias , christian names, germans occupied hungary in 1944. family fled safe houses year, until soviet forces invaded country. however, soviets mistakenly believed paul soros wanted ss officer , arrested him. marched east, towards soviet union other prisoners. managed escape prisoner march ducking behind bridge , hiding in abandoned farm house. walked budapest.


paul soros survived war , emigrated united states in 1948. arrived in manhattan after defecting hungary, under communist control, while traveling in switzerland hungarian olympic ski team.


career

soros arrived in new york city little money. enrolled @ brooklyn collegiate , polytechnic institute (present-day polytechnic institute of new york university), earned master s degree, not afford higher priced ivy league universities. resided in cheap apartment near prospect park student, still struggled pay rent , food.


soros founded soros associates, designs , develops bulk handling , port facilities. example, brazilian multinational, tubarão, used designs created soros company quadruple brazil s iron ore output , become world s largest corporate iron ore producer. soros associates operates in 91 countries around world.


philanthropy

paul soros , wife, daisy soros, founded paul & daisy soros fellowships new americans, provides funding graduate degrees immigrants , children of immigrants. each year thirty students receive fellowship awarded $90,000 cover 2 years of graduate tuition, living , other expenses. fellows may study subject wish @ american university however, awarded fellowship, students must demonstrate unique idea or talent, have accomplished concrete through long term effort, , have been involved government or other organization dedicated ideals of u.s. bill of rights.


paul , daisy soros founded paul , daisy soros fellowship in 1998 $50 million. 2010, had awarded more $30 million 400 students. dedicated additional $25 million fellowship in 2010. paul soros served chairman of fellowship, , son, jeffrey soros, became president in 2010.


later life

soros died @ fifth avenue home on upper east side of manhattan on june 15, 2013, @ age of 87. had suffered parkinson s disease, diabetes, jaw cancer , tongue cancer during later life. soros survived wife, daisy soros (née schlenger), who, husband, hungarian jewish immigrant, , whom had 2 sons, peter , jeffrey.
