the walking fingers logo created henry alexander , known new england artist. upon graduation swain school of design in new bedford, massachusetts, mr. alexander began freelance career illustrator , commercial designer. formed long association new england telephone company lasting thirty-one years. in 1962 designed walking fingers logo , within year became national trademark yellow pages.


at&t, creator , owner of famous three-fingered version of walking fingers logo, never applied trademark on logo. while received trademark on different version of logo, version 3 fingers not considered at&t proprietary , in fact allowed telephone directory use it. throughout 1970s, many cities ran television ads showing disembodied hand walking across open copy of yellow pages, slogan let fingers walking.


the bell system later applied trademark on logo had trademark denied on grounds had become generic indicator of yellow pages without regard particular source. shortly thereafter, bell began using trademarkable logo lightbulb instead of walking fingers, returned walking fingers 2 years later.


in countries, familiar walking fingers logo not protected trademark , may used anyone. logo used in varying forms every yellow pages publisher; however, there companies use imitate mainstream publishers.


in belgium, republic of ireland, israel , netherlands directory, although using yellow pages logo, called golden pages .
