Background Gastein Convention



schleswig (until 1864 danish fief), holstein , lauenburg (until 1864 german confederation)


the duchies of schleswig , holstein had been united under danish rule since 1460. while schleswig north of eider river danish fief, duchies of holstein officially remained estate of holy roman empire kings of denmark held imperial fief. in 1815 king frederick vi of denmark acquired adjacent duchy of saxe-lauenburg. both holstein , lauenburg member states of german confederation since 1815.


when in 1858 danish national liberal council president carl christian hall drafted november constitution in order link schleswig more closely danish kingdom, sparked german protests, , troops of german confederation occupied holstein , lauenburg in 1863. in following second schleswig war, denmark defeated , according treaty of vienna signed on 30 october 1864 had cede elbe duchies victorious prussia , austria.


after war, 2 powers faced issue of governing provinces formerly held danish royal house of glücksburg in personal union. prussia aimed @ annexation of territories provinces state territory, against strong resistance of austrians, persisted on status of autonomous duchies of confederation ruled condominium. ease tensions, prussian minister-president otto von bismarck met austrian envoy gustav von blome @ spa town of bad gastein in austrian alps.
