Route Rim Drive



rim drive 33-mile (53 km) loop road around crater lake


rim drive located high in cascade mountains. @ lowest point, rim drive 6,500 feet (2,000 m) above sea level. road reaches 7,900 feet (2,400 m) @ highest point on top of cloudcap. rim drive has 8 main viewing areas roadside parking. 4 of these observation points (pumice point, skell head, cloudcap, , kerr notch) located off road. short trails parking areas lead other 4 observation points (sinnott memorial, discovery point, watchman lookout, , merriam point). in addition main viewing areas, there 15 turnout vista points along road.


heading northwest crater lake national park headquarters in munson valley historic district, 3 miles (5 km) crater lake rim , rim village visitor area historic district. sinnott memorial overlook located in rim village. leaving rim village, speed limit reduced 35 miles per hour (56 km/h). visitors reach discovery point viewing area in on 1 mile (1.6 km). there, 5 miles (8 km) junction north entrance road. between these 2 way points visitors pass on 7,350 feet (2,240 m) west rim summit. section of rim drive between rim village , north entrance road known west rim drive. part of road used heavily during summer because direct route between park’s north , south entrances , passes rim village visitor area , park headquarters @ munson valley. offers classic views of crater lake , wizard island along way.

continuing north on rim drive past north entrance road junction, visitors traverse side of llao rock. beginning of east rim drive. next turnout viewing lake approximately 2 miles beyond north entrance road junction. viewpoints along east rim drive not crowded except @ cleetwood cover parking area @ north end of crater lake. cleetwood cove trailhead hiking trail down crater. national park service maintains marina boat tours @ cleetwood cove.


beyond cleetwood cove, on east rim drive there series of 7 turnout-parking vista points. these turnouts retain of original stone masonry , have views of crater lake. first of these view points located above grotto cove, halfway around lake rim village. next viewing area skell head, half mile grotto cove. next 5 vista points spread on approximately 7 miles. these stops cloudcap, cottage rocks, sentinel point, reflection point, , kerr notch. each site has views of lake , surrounding landscape include mount scott.

kerr notch, located 21 miles (34 km) rim village, last observation point on rim drive loop view of lake. after leaving kerr notch road cuts across east face of dutton ridge offering view of klamath basin near east rim summit. rim drive descends sun notch trailhead visitors can hike viewpoint overlooking lake. rim drive continues along outer edge of sun meadow parking area in front of vidae falls, 100-foot (30 m) cascade. vidae falls has picnic area , trailhead cinder cone called crater peak. final 2 miles (3 km) of rim drive passes castle crest wildflower garden. half mile long castle crest nature trail takes visitor through wetland wildflower meadow. wildflower display @ peak in july , august. rim drive terminates half mile castle crest parking area, @ munson valley road junction near park headquarters , visitor center.
