aroeira 3

the westernmost find of human skull, 400,000 year old homo heidelbergensis skull, aroeira 3, announced in spring 2017 - earliest human trace in portugal. cave of aroeira archaeological , paleoanthropological site in central limestone massif of portuguese estremadura. cave located in village of almonda[1], in civil parish of zibreira[2], in municipality of torres novas in district of santarém.


arago 21

homo erectus tautavelensis



on 22 july 1971 near village of tautavel in pyrénées-orientales, team of prof. henry de lumley discovered 450,000 year old human skull following 7 years of excavations in mountain cave called caune de l arago. since discovery of tautavel man (homo erectus tautavelensis), annual excavations have revealed more 1 hundred human fossils, making cave 1 of largest prehistoric deposits in world. skeletons @ tautavel among oldest human remains ever discovered in europe. arago cave, close village, occupied periodically between 690,000 , 35,000 years ago. although scientist not explicitly relate these finds h. heidelbergensis, morphological characteristics of humans preceded neanderthal.


bodo cranium

the bodo cranium found members of expedition led jon kalb in 1976 @ bodo d ar, awash river valley of ethiopia. initial discovery - lower face - made alemayhew asfaw , charles smart. 2 weeks later, paul whitehead , craig wood found upper portion of face. skull 600,000 years old.


boxgrove man

one of hundreds of handaxes found @ boxgrove.



in 1994 british scientists unearthed lower hominin tibia bone of boxgrove man few miles away english channel, along hundreds of ancient hand axes, @ boxgrove quarry site. partial leg bone dated between 478,000 , 524,000 years old. several h. heidelbergensis teeth found in subsequent seasons. h. heidelbergensis proto-human species occupied both france , great britain @ time; these locales connected landmass during epoch.


the tibia had been gnawed large carnivore, suggesting man had been killed lion or wolf, or unburied corpse had been scavenged after death.

kabwe 1, called broken hill skull, assigned arthur smith woodward in 1921 type specimen homo rhodesiensis; today scientists assign homo heidelbergensis. cranium found in lead , zinc mine in broken hill, northern rhodesia (now kabwe, zambia) in 1921 tom zwiglaar, swiss miner. in addition cranium, upper jaw individual, sacrum, tibia, , 2 femur fragments found. skull dubbed rhodesian man @ time of find, commonly referred broken hill skull or kabwe cranium.

the first fossil discovery of species made on october 21, 1907, , came mauer, germany. here, workman daniel hartmann spotted jaw in sandpit. jaw (mauer 1) in condition except missing premolar teeth, found near jaw. workman gave professor otto schoetensack university of heidelberg, identified , named fossil.


the next h. heidelbergensis remains found in steinheim der murr, germany (the steinheim skull, 350kya); arago, france (arago 21); petralona, greece; ciampate del diavolo, italy; dali, jinniushan , maba (guangdong), china. in 1925–1926 francis turville-petre unearthed galilee skull @ mugharet el-zuttiyeh in israel, first ancient hominin fossil found in western asia.

saldanha cranium

saldanha cranium or elandsfontein cranium fossilized remains of hominin species considered homo heidelbergensis. remains found in 1954 in elandsfontein, located in hopefield of south africa. date remains southernmost hominid find.


schöningen, germany

the schöningen spears 8 wooden throwing spears palaeolithic age, found under management of dr. hartmut thieme lower saxony state service cultural heritage (nld) between 1994 , 1998 in open-cast lignite mine, schöningen, county helmstedt, germany, approx. 16,000 animal bones. more 300,000 years old, oldest preserved hunting weapons in world , regarded first evidence of active hunt h. heidelbergensis. these discoveries have permanently changed picture of cultural , social development of man.























beginning in 1992, spanish team has located more 5,500 human bones dated age of @ least 350,000 years in sima de los huesos site in sierra de atapuerca in northern spain. pit contains fossils of perhaps 32 individuals remains of ursus deningeri , other carnivores , biface nicknamed excalibur. hypothesized acheulean axe made of red quartzite kind of ritual offering funeral. if so, oldest evidence of known of funerary practices. ninety percent of known h. heidelbergensis remains have been obtained site. fossil pit bones include:



a complete cranium (skull 5), nicknamed miguelón, , fragments of other crania, such skull 4, nicknamed agamemnón , skull 6, nicknamed rui (from el cid, local hero).
a complete pelvis (pelvis 1), nicknamed elvis, in remembrance of elvis presley.
mandibles, teeth, , many postcranial bones (femurs, hand , foot bones, vertebrae, ribs, etc.)

nearby sites contain known , controversial homo antecessor fossils.


there current debate among scholars whether remains @ sima de los huesos of h. heidelbergensis or h. neanderthalensis. in 2015, study of mitochondrial dna samples 3 caves sima de los huesos revealed distantly related mitochondrial dna of denisovans rather of neanderthals.


in 2016 nuclear dna analysis determined sima hominins neanderthals , not denisova hominins , divergence between neanderthals , denisovans predates 430,000 years ago.


suffolk, england
in 2005 flint tools , teeth water vole mimomys savini, key dating species, found in cliffs @ pakefield near lowestoft in suffolk. suggests hominins can dated in england 700,000 years ago, potentially cross between h. antecessor , h. heidelbergensis.
