after breakup of show carver put smaller show, featured trained animals , shooting exhibitions. biographer wrote carver added diving horse act show in kansas city, missouri, in august 1894. carver told several versions of story describing exciting escape bandits, inspired diving horse act, remembered him in nebraska said got idea after plunging on horseback off bank deep hole in medicine creek. on next few years other acts eliminated, , diving horse exhibition became carver s primary endeavor. included in touring company son, al, helped train , take care of horses, , daughter, lorena, said first rider. time future daughter-in-law, sonora webster, joined show in 1924, carver had 2 diving teams on road, each performing in different city.


in june 1927, carver attended old-timers convention in norfolk, nebraska, enjoyed reuniting other frontiersmen. following convention traveled omaha, nebraska, , while there received word favorite horse had drowned following dive pacific ocean. sonora later wrote loss of horse coupled failing health seemed diminish carver s desire live. died on august 31, 1927, in sacramento, california, , buried beside mother , sister in winslow, illinois. sonora remembered carver stern , taciturn man loved horses , insisted given best of care.


following carver s death, diving horse show continued al carver @ helm. in october 1928 al carver , sonora webster married. short time later signed contract season s engagement @ atlantic city s steel pier, , diving horse act became permanent fixture there several years. sonora webster carver lost eyesight in 1931 when horse red lips dove tank off-balance, causing hit water face first. failed close eyes enough, resulting in detached retinas. though blinded, sonora continued act eleven years. younger sister, arnette webster (later french), had joined show in 1930 , started diving in 1931.


al , sonora carver retired in 1942. act closed result of pressure animal rights groups in 1970s. sonora carver, however, contended horses never forced dive and, in fact, enjoyed act. died in september 2003, @ age of 99. career inspired 1991 disney movie wild hearts can t broken, starring gabrielle anwar , based on carver s memoir, girl , 5 brave horses.
