bas ploem started painting small boy. while still @ secondary school attended evening course in drawing , painting @ “kunstnijverheidsschool maastricht”.


ploem’s presence in paris important knowledge , interest in art since regularly visit cousins in paris, painter frits klein , son yves. visited kleins when yves making first monochromes.


in last years of activities @ faculty of medicine @ leiden university, concentrated on research in image analysis. asked participate in european project aim of automating cancer cell recognition using computer analysis. concerned collaborative project german optical company leitz/leica microsystems, , institute mathematical morphology in fontainebleau, france. team, professor jean serra @ institute had developed image analysis method, internationally known ‘mathematical morphology’ (mm). experience analogue painter, ploem saw possibility of applying methods of mathematical morphology creation of digital art .


at international symposium on mathematical morphology in amsterdam (1998), j.s ploem presented paper on creation of computer graphics mathematical morphology, using first time, transforming algorithms fontainebleau group creation of digital art. (mathematical morphology , applications image , signal processing, heijmans , roerdink (eds), kluwer. 1098: page 355:) ploem described , developed methodology creation of transformational digital art.

ploem first person systematically use mathematical morphology creation of digital art, ploem’s work attracted international attention , invited plenary speaker @ international mathematical conference in amsterdam in 1998 explain new type of digital art. received invitation show art work in exposition @ conference. organisers of meeting asked ploem write chapter on novel technique digital art in book (kluwer, isbn 0-7923-5133-9) published on occasion of meeting.


he invited symposium on ‘art et science’ @ university of caen, france (april, 2001). @ art exposition connected symposium, presented 6 digital graphics dominated chaotic transformations of rock art themes. similar invitation made university of basel in switzerland (april, 2002).
