the stoclet palace commissioned adolphe stoclet (1871-1949), wealthy industrialist , art collector. chose 35-year-old austrian architect josef hoffmann (1870-1956), founder member of vienna secession, radical group of designers , artists established in 1897. hoffman abandoned fashions , styles of past , produced building asymmetrical compilation of rectangular blocks, underlined exaggerated lines , corners.


the starkness of exterior softened artistic windows, break through line of eaves, rooftop conservatory , bronze sculptures of 4 nude males franz metzner, mounted on tower rises above stairwell. regimented upright balustrades line balconies, touched art nouveau ornamentation.
