traditionally, saint-jean-de-maurienne has been stronghold of socialist left, 1930s, due importance of worker labor pool. thus, roland merloz socialist mayor 1977 2008. since 1990s , sociological changes in maurienne (departure of factories, multiplication of tourist resorts, decrease of population increase in representation of elderly), right-wing vote has increased. ump councillor general, pierre-marie charvoz, elected in 2001, nicolas sarkozy in lead in 2 rounds of presidential elections of 2007, respectively 33.5% , 56.62%, , in 2008, pierre-marie charvoz won communal elections.

in second round, turnout 68.57%. number of voters amounted 3,642 voters 3,509 expressing themselves. in second round, presidential majority list of ensemble pour saint jean head, pierre-marie charvoz collected 55.40% of vote or 1,944 votes , won 23 seats. list of saint jean 10 000 conducted hervé bottino, received 44.60% of vote or 1,565 votes , therefore awarded 6 seats. other lists not present in second round.

the sovereign building in 2011 the whitehall mall store sold leh s department store, several years flagship store on hamilton street in allentown remained vacant. added national register of historic places in 1979. in december 1982 allentown store purchased sovereign realty , development. building renovated , reopened sovereign building in may 1984. renovations included glass-arched entrance pedestrian plaza between hamilton , court streets leading grapefruit-domed lobby decor of antique brass, mirrors, greenery , wing-backed chairs. main floor , basement developed retail spaces, while upper floors turned 42 private office suites. sovereign later went financial difficulties , building sold @ sheriffs sale on 22 september 1989. today building operated office building owner resides in philadelphia.
