the 2009 remains of bryant s grocery , meat market, emmett till encountered carolyn bryant in 1955


money became infamous result of murder of emmett till, 14-year-old african-american boy chicago, visiting uncle moses wright in august 1955. till accused of flirting carolyn bryant, white woman working alone @ bryant s grocery, store owned husband roy bryant. in 2007 bryant revealed had fabricated details of encounter testified to.


after encounter, roy bryant , half-brother, j.w. milam, abducted, tortured , murdered till because of rumor had flirted bryant s wife. pair arrested , tried murder, acquitted all-white jury. several months later, confessed killing in interview william bradford huie published in january 1956 issue of magazine.


till s mother, mamie till bradley, insisted on open casket funeral in chicago. wanted people see had been done son, had been badly beaten before death. allowed news photographs of body published. national awareness heightened of lynching in south , oppression , violence against blacks under jim crow. many southern historians suggest emmett till murder sparked level of outrage helped galvanize civil rights movement of 1960s, drawing national attention injustices in south.

the sovereign building in 2011 the whitehall mall store sold leh s department store, several years flagship store on hamilton street in allentown remained vacant. added national register of historic places in 1979. in december 1982 allentown store purchased sovereign realty , development. building renovated , reopened sovereign building in may 1984. renovations included glass-arched entrance pedestrian plaza between hamilton , court streets leading grapefruit-domed lobby decor of antique brass, mirrors, greenery , wing-backed chairs. main floor , basement developed retail spaces, while upper floors turned 42 private office suites. sovereign later went financial difficulties , building sold @ sheriffs sale on 22 september 1989. today building operated office building owner resides in philadelphia.
