the building museum located built in 1850, one-storeyed caravanserais. in 1915, building given “metropol” hotel , second storey rebuilt. then, in 1918-1920’s, workers of cabinet of ministers of azerbaijan democratic republic lived , worked there; in 1920-30’s labor union soviet of azerbaijan located there.


on november 1, 1939, according order of council of people’s commissars of azerbaijan ssr under number № 4972, memorial museum named after nizami created in building in connection 800th anniversary of persian poet nizami ganjavi. building overhauled project of architects sadikh dadashov , mikayil huseynov, placed sculptures in façade , reconstructed 2 floors. later, memorial museum changed museum of azerbaijani literature. interior of museum designed letif kerimov. during world war ii, when 800th anniversary of persian poet nizami ganjavi celebrated in leningrad blockade, placement work of museum’s exposition continued. on may 14, 1945, museum opened doors visitors after victory in great patriotic war, in spite of that, museum established in 1939.


twice, in 1959 , 1967, museum overhauled, expanded , upgraded. in 2001-2003, museum changed again.


in summer, 2005, after visit of ilham aliyev-the president of azerbaijan on december 30, 2004, prepared new projects, on basis of museum overhauled , renewed. cabinet of ministers of azerbaijan republic assigned 13 million manats reason. area of exposition expanded 2500 square meters, , number of halls upgraded 30 main , 10 auxiliary. if there demonstrated 1000 of 120000 exhibits till reconstruction, after reconstruction number of them reached 25000.
