following confusing see-saw encounter, kokoda fell japanese in august, followed heavy fighting around deniki. after that, main body of japanese troops, major general tomitaro horii s south seas detachment, began arrive rabaul. first major battle of campaign took place around isurava later in month veteran australian 21st brigade, under brigadier arnold potts, reinforced militia troops of maroubra force had been holding line point. @ end of month, in effort slow japanese advance, australians had established blocking force around eora creek, south of village of eora, on high ground overlooking templeton s crossing. following efforts around isurava, japanese 144th infantry regiment rested, , 41st infantry regiment assigned task of following australians withdrew south , attempt destroy them.
