bismarck s negotiation skills had apparently been underestimated blome. though prussia benefitted treaty, minister-president noted bonding of cracks did not answer german question nor did ease austria–prussia rivalry. treaty ran counter legal basis of german confederation, led refusal smaller confederation states , turned out detrimental reputation of austrian side. european powers reacted strongly, french emperor napoleon iii responded protest, while british saw interests in north sea threatened; treaty nevertheless appreciated russia in view of enmity austria after crimean war.


the gastein convention marked end off attempts seek peaceful solution of german question. collapsed due bismarck s successful efforts provoke war austrian empire eliminate austria german confederation. austrian government had tolerated rule of duke frederick viii of schleswig-holstein, chagrin of prussia. on 1 june 1866 austria asked federal convention resolution on status of holstein, prussia regarded breach of mutual agreement. under pretext, prussian troops entered holstein 9 days later led outbreak of austro-prussian war, known 7 weeks war.


the peace of prague in 1866 confirmed denmark s cession of schlewig , holstein, both annexed prussia, promised plebiscite decide whether north schleswig wished return danish rule. provision unilaterally set aside resolution of prussia , austria in 1878. instead prussian province of schleswig-holstein created in 1868. both territories admitted zollverein (german customs union), headed prussia, of austria not member.

the sovereign building in 2011 the whitehall mall store sold leh s department store, several years flagship store on hamilton street in allentown remained vacant. added national register of historic places in 1979. in december 1982 allentown store purchased sovereign realty , development. building renovated , reopened sovereign building in may 1984. renovations included glass-arched entrance pedestrian plaza between hamilton , court streets leading grapefruit-domed lobby decor of antique brass, mirrors, greenery , wing-backed chairs. main floor , basement developed retail spaces, while upper floors turned 42 private office suites. sovereign later went financial difficulties , building sold @ sheriffs sale on 22 september 1989. today building operated office building owner resides in philadelphia.
