while gun fire shell approximately 5800-5900 yards, no. 56 time , percussion fuze in use in 1899 set maximum timed range of 4100 yards because burned 13 seconds. shrapnel shells in use time-set burst in air above , in front of enemy. hence gunners had within approximately 4200 yards of enemy fire on them. fuze set explode on contact (percussion) maximum range, shrapnel exploding on contact of little use. rectified later in war no. 57 blue fuze time set 5800-5900 yards.
