the history of lobbes abbey known in relative detail because fortunately, , unlike abbeys, ancient annals survived. monastery founded saint landelin around 650. landelin young man well-to-do family in bapaume, lived sinful life head of band of brigands. after repenting, founded monastery @ place had committed sins, @ shores of river sambre. number of monks @ new monastery increased rapidly , founder grew tired of duties abbot, in 680 resigned post , dedicated rest of life worship of god.
